Mobile gaming - this is what you can gamble on your cell phone

Mobile games are no longer a novelty: everyone knows classics like Candy Crush, Angry Birds or Subway Surfers, with which you can pass the time waiting at the bus stop. With better and better cell phones, the quality of the games is also increasing and smartphones are becoming more and more of a gaming alternative. In this article, you'll learn about the current state of mobile gaming and which games are worth playing.

Mobile gaming: from Snake to Battle Royal

A lot has happened in the mobile games industry since the 90s. Nevertheless, it's important to remember where mobile gaming started: with the old black-and-white classics like Snake, preinstalled on most Nokia phones at the time. However, the invention of smartphones was crucial for the real boom in mobile gaming: high computing power and the touchscreen made games like Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Temple Run or Candy Crush possible in the first place. With new technologies like augmented reality, mobile gaming has even found its very own niche. The worldwide mega-success Pokémon Go was followed by Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and The Witcher: Monster Slayer, two more AR games that open up a whole new way to explore the surroundings. Another new chapter in the mobile games industry is currently dawning: Modern smartphones with eight-core processors, ample RAM and a screen resolution of 90 hertz make it possible to play current shooters smoothly in real 3D graphics. Tournaments for the mobile versions of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds have been viewed millions of times, and more and more mobile players are qualifying for the big tournaments in the global hit Fortnite.

Which games are worth playing on which smartphone?

Basically, you can play the classic games with 2D graphics on any reasonably good smartphone. These include not only the well-known mini-games, but also various exciting online games: for example, you can slowly build up your own settlement in build-up strategy games like Clash of Clans or Forge of Empires and compete with other players in epic battles. There's even more action in titles like Clash Royale or Brawl Stars. The two real-time strategy games, which are also played as e-sports, can also be played well on a normal smartphone. The same applies to the various AR games - apart from a camera and GPS, your phone does not need any special features. However, most mid-range smartphones reach their limits when it comes to more complex titles like Fortnite, Pubg or Call of Duty Mobile. If you do not own a high-end device, you will have to be prepared for game crashes and partly stuttering gameplay.

If you are serious about mobile gaming, you should consider a gaming smartphone. Of course, these are also suitable for everyday use, but they have some features that are specifically designed for gaming. Besides powerful processors and a high screen resolution, these include additional buttons or attachable gamepads. Thus, they are a real alternative to handheld consoles and are well suited for playing your favorite games on the go. However, it remains the same: Mobile gaming is not yet a real alternative to gaming on the PC or console. Even if they work smoothly on the cell phone, games like Pubg or Call of Duty are simply more fun on a large screen.

Conclusion: What you can expect from mobile gaming

Mobile gaming offers something for everyone: whether you just want to play small mini-games in between, dream of starting your e-sports career or want to play action-packed 3D shooters - it's all possible with a smartphone. However, the more elaborate the game, the better your phone has to be. Shooters, for example, only look really good on special gaming smartphones or top-of-the-range models. However, since the market for mobile games is constantly growing and the e-sports scene is also getting bigger, you can expect further improvements in the future.
